The Soviet Union—the world’s first socialist state—promised its citizens a society free from inequality, exploitation, injustice, and every kind of unhappiness. Marxists promised heaven on earth, far superior, they thought, to Christianity’s promise of redemption in the next world. Given today’s growing interest in socialism, what can Christians learn from Russia’s catastrophic experiment in the 20th century with socialism? Why are so many people in the U.S., including some Christians, attracted to achieving the promises of socialism, even knowing the suffering it caused? Is today’s woke culture related to Russia’s 20th century history of social justice?
